Description

Toledo: Writing Our Place is a dedication to and celebration of the Toledo District schools, teachers, and students in Belize.

Toledo contains the writing of secondary English language arts educators engaged in a summer 2023 professional development workshop, Place as Curriculum: A Place-Based Writing Workshop for Teachers, held at the University of Belize, Punta Gorda, Belize. The workshop was led by Oklahoma State University’s Dr. Sarah J. Donovan and Dr. Jenn Sanders with doctoral student Deborah Williams and funded by Dr. Sanders Dresser Endowment in Rural Teacher Education.

Secondary educators participated in a 3-day writing workshop focusing on place-based writing pedagogies, crafting place-based poetry and narratives informed by mentor-texts, collaborative writing, place inquiry, and process-oriented writing.

The teacher-writers who participated in the workshop have contributed autobiographical poems and journey narratives of places that have shaped their identities.

The 3-day workshop highlighted various instructional strategies for nurturing writer agency such as exploring mentor texts, collaborative discovery, brainstorming and planning activities, drafting, peer conferring, and revising for publication.
