Ethical ELA Guest Blogger: Fidan

Welcome to  part two of My 8th Grade Writing Experience. For this part two I will be giving some tips for 8th grade teachers before school starts again this fall.

The first advice I have is that, when you teach your students types of poems or any other type of techniques, I suggest to let the student write a poem or short paragraph about something they like, but of course including the technique in their writing. For example, I’d write an ode to writing including apostrophe (the figure of speech). So this way, they learn and write about what makes them happy. I enjoyed doing that a lot, and I’m sure other students would, too!

Another advice I have is to encourage the kids as much as you can. Once you get to know your students better and find out about their likes and passions, encourage them to write about it. That’s how I realized I love writing- maybe somebody else will too.

When having projects or having the students write poems or anything else that students can collaborate on, let the kids work in partners. I met a lot of my close friends to this day because of being able to work with new people. Not only is it a chance for them to get to know new people, but a way to get other people’s opinions on our writing. It’s a way where we can look at our writing from other perspectives we never thought of before. But most importantly, it inspires the students to push beyond what they think is enough by giving them ideas and encouraging them.

Thank you and I hope this helps a bit for this year school year. Tomorrow, I will post a few of my poems and a picture of myself to wrap things up.

Fidan is 14 years old and  going to be a high school freshman.  She enjoys  playing piano, skateboarding, and ,of course, writing. She likes writing poems and sometimes even short stories. She enjoys life and being happy and loves  making others happy as well.
